Pediatric
Trauma Prevention is one of the major
projects supported by Kiwanis clubs
in Division 30 so on February 22, 2003, the Kiwanis Clubs of Division 30
provided a free child car seat check-up at Adventure City Theme Park,
Stanton.
Working
in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol, KIA, Buckle Down and
Buckle Up, parents in the community were invited to bring their cars and
child safety seats to Adventure City and receive a safety inspection by
certified officers from the CHP.
Officers
checked for proper installation, recall notices, and a history of use in a
previous accident. Once a child car seat has been in an accident,
much of its protection is lost and it must be replaced.
No
adults are ever cited at these events. When a child car seat
installation cannot be corrected or the seat is no longer useable, the CHP
replaces the seat for the family at no charge. The CHP reports that
90% of all child car seats are installed improperly.
As
the parents drove into the parking lot, Kiwanians helped direct them to
the inspection area. Lt. Governor-Elect Stephaine Walker, the
Kiwanis organizer, helped the parents with the registration and explained
the program.
With
the inspection finished, the parents had time to visit with the Kiwanians
there who explain the activities of their clubs and interested parents
were invited to a Kiwanis meeting.
Thanks
to Ltg-elect Stephaine Walker for organizing the event, and to members of
the Greater Anaheim, La Palma, Whittier-Rio Hondo and Brea Kiwanis clubs
for participating.
